Officials say Melissa Williams-Brown used forged consent forms and posed as an employer conducting background checks to illegally obtain protected educational records and other personal data from the National Student Clearinghouse, a government agency affiliated with the United States Department of Education (DOE).

Authorities say the latest scam was part of a larger decade long charade where Melissa Williams-Brown went to extraordinary lengths to fake a college degree she never had. Components of the complicated subterfuge included placing fake newspaper articles in the
Los Angeles Times and Irvine World News touting degrees and postgraduate work at the prestigious George Washington University.
